The Rainbow: a poem of Diversity

I look around, and what I see
is a rainbow of diversity.
Walking through, it's hard to think -
Things could be very different.

I hear the stories, I read the books
about teasing based on likes and looks.
I don't know this reality
for it does not apply to me.

What is this? How could this be?
"To be any colour in between,
Is that so wrong?" I think.
Jeering brings some to death's brink . . .

Bullies think that wrong and  right
is as easy as black and white.
They taunt the shades of gray,
Mock the paint that colours you today.

Pigments of beige, slight brown hues,
Muslim, Orthodox or maybe Jew
Nondescript or pretty,
Gay or lesbian luminosity.

The world is one large canvas
That paints each and every one of us.
But without colour, without diversity,
What kind of art piece would it be?

Who says that the are only a few?
Who says bullies aren't uncomfortable, too?
Don't be shy, just be true
To find the aurora inside you

Blue is the sky we dream of
Red is warmth and love
Green is the earth we walk on
Yellow is the shining sun

What makes a rainbow? Sunshine, rain,
Red, blue, mauve, green and gold as grain
If teardrops join the smiles
If you show your true colours

Clouds will part and banish woe
Colours far and wide will glow
To make that rainbow stretch from
Here to kingdom come!

  2. It's a pity you did not submit it to a writing contest. It is really good, so don't be devastated if someone steals it from you.
