Cameron Morgan goes to the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women.
It's world's foremost school for spies - with classes such as Covert Operations, Countries of the World, Advanced Encryption and Protection and Enforcement (P&E).
Cammie Morgan comes to visit her friend and roommate Macey McHenryin Boston at the end of their summer vacation. It should be exciting - after all, she's there to watch Macey's father, Senator McHenry, accept the nomination for vice president of the United States.
But then, Cammie and Macey come to the wrong place in the wrong time - smack into a deadly kidnapper's plot. Cammie finds familiar the emblem on a ring that one of the kidnappers was wearing, but she can't seem to remember. They only just save themselves by plummeting down a laundry chute. I quote: "We were just two girls who got lucky . . ."
When she wakes up, she finds that her mother and Mr Solomon, her CoveOps (short for Covert Operations) teacher, have taken her to Mr. Solomon's cottage on a lake. Macey tells Cam that it felt peaceful there, better than Macey's family's house on Martha's Vineyard.
When they go back to school, Macey is assigned a bodyguard (thankfully a graduate of the Gallagher Academy. The secret must, above all things, not be exposed) - Cammie's aunt, Abigail, whom she hadn't seen since Cam's dad went on a mission and never came home.
Macey's parents want their daughter with them frequently on the campaign trail. But Cam, with her other roommates Bex and Liz (Rebecca and Elizabeth) worry that even with every layer of protection Macey is surrounded with, she might not be safe.
So the three entail themselves, without telling anyone, as Macey's personal, covert security detail to try to keep her safe. Cammie encounters Zach Goode, a boy whose school did an exchange with Gallagher the semester before - once, at an appearance Macey and her family, with their competitors, the Winters family; once, at a campaign party(It was exclusive, but they weren't invited. Liz faked invitations. Zach probably snuck in.) where Cammie realized that Zach had been tracking her in Boston; and yet two more times (see below . . . ).
When back at school, Cammie remembers where she's seen the emblem on the kidnapper's ring before: it is the emblem of the Circle of Cavan, an ancient terrorist organization, a powerful enemy even in Gillian Gallagher's day. Gilly killed the leader of the Circle with his own sword. Cam, Bex, and Liz believe that the Circle of Cavan is after Macey because she is a straight descendant of Gillian Gallagher - the last true Gallagher Girl. The Circle must want revenge.
But at the Roseville Festival - Cammie and Macey sneak out of the Gallagher Academy, tired of confinement (Cam got in trouble for sneaking out to that party to trail Macey) they go out, and Cam runs into Zach again. Macey overhears them talking about how the Circle would want Macey because of her lineage, and she becomes angry - and runs away.
Many organizations, as well as Gallagher teachers, begin to look for Macey, and they follow a false lead somewhere in Europe. But Cammie figures out where Macey would go: the cottage on the lake.
But when Cammie brought her back, to a big Winters-McHenry event where several Gallagher teachers, faculty and trustees, etc, were waiting - she finds that Zach is there. They go outside to a darkened street, where Cammie tries to find out why he was in Boston, but a van screeches up, and blocks all exits.
It's the Circle of Cavan. They had come to try to kidnap Cammie . . . again.
Bex, Liz and Macey arrive, and fight the kidnappers as well, but Cammie is grabbed and her mouth is secured with a drugged rag. Macey runs to try to save her, but a kidnapper raises a gun towards her-
A shot rings out, but -
It's not Macey lying on the pavement, wound bleeding. It's Abigail.
All ends well: Abby is alive, arm in a sling; Cam, Macey, Bex and Liz are all in one piece; Zach disappeared off somewhere; and Professor Buckingham tells Cammie about a course she'll be offering in the spring - the History of Espionage - where they will be taught about the Circle of Cavan.
But it's not the end . . . Look out for Only the Good Spy Young!
